About Us
The foundation of our training is Isshinryu, a style of martial arts from Okinawa that is designed to be very practical. Its name translates to "one heart way". Stances and movements are based on natural body positioning. It is balanced in design -- left and right -- feet and hands - are all equally treated. There is no reliance on high kicks or over extended movements. Thus, it is appropriate for all -- young and old, women and men, athletic and non-athletic alike.
As you see with quotes throughout the site, we love Zen. Not mysterious as some people think, Zen comes in many forms and at its core is the practice of art of living in the moment. Although sometimes hard to understand, we find so many Zen quotes to be simple and inspiring, and hope you do, too.
We also feature bamboo as a key symbol, because of all its positive properties and elements. Bamboo is fast growing. It is used in culinary, construction, music and medicine. In China it is a symbol of longevity. In India a symbol of friendship. In Japan, it is a sacred barrier against evil. All of those associations are found in our teachings.
Our programs are currently available throughout Southeast and Mid-Michigan. Please send inquires to Master Burke at oneheartkarate@gmail.com.
"The Traveling Sensei"
In November 1988, Keith Burke began training at Southfield Martial Arts Institute under legendary Grandmaster Willie Adams. Keith obtained his black belt in December, 1993 and immediately started assisting with teaching classes. In January, 2002, then a 3rd degree "sensei", Keith initiated a program in Macomb, MI to spread his enthusiasm for martial arts. He earned the rank of 5th degree "Master" in June, 2014.
Today, Keith travels around to bring martial arts to as many people as possible, rather than focusing on a single dojo of his own. He runs clinics and classes in a variety locations, and he formed One Heart Karate to further his mission.
Keith is also an author. His first book, "Begins With One", uses martial arts principles to help people deal with change, face obstacles and live a more fulfilling life. (Available through Amazon Kindle). "The Traveling Sensei", has an undergraduate degree in Accounting and an MBA from the University of Michigan. He lives with his wife and two sons in suburban Detroit.
Grandmaster Adams
Master Burke owes everything to Grandmaster Willie Adams. A 10th degree black belt, one of the highest ranking and most accomplished martial artists in the world, Grandmaster Adams is everything a martial artist should be. To this day, he teaches everyone who is willing to learn, from beginners on their first day to high ranking black belts, young and old alike. His humility, kindness, and leadership are the standard to which Master Burke tries to live.

If a man should conquer in battle a thousand and a thousand more,
and another man should conquer himself,
his would be the greater victory,
because the greatest of victories is the victory over oneself.

Our greatest glory is not in never failing but in rising every time we fall.
